No matter where you are in your journey, low self-esteem can significantly impact your mental health. Negative thoughts about yourself can lead to depression, anxiety, panic attacks, anger, or other issues. Self-esteem often begins in childhood and may fluctuate depending on your life experiences, both good and bad.
For women of color, these struggles can be compounded by additional challenges such as racial trauma, microaggressions, and systemic biases. The unique pressures of navigating a world that often marginalizes your experiences can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.
There may come a time when you no longer recognize who you are. You start to please everyone, losing focus on your wants and needs. You begin to doubt yourself and your abilities, stay in unhealthy relationships, make self-destructive decisions (such as using drugs/alcohol, engaging in promiscuity, or developing eating disorders), or withdraw and isolate. You become stuck and unable to move forward. You lose yourself and who you are. Sometimes, you even forget who you once were.
If this sounds familiar, I am here to help. Many women are affected by childhood experiences that shape how they feel about themselves. That's why I specialize in helping women who have experienced abandonment by their fathers.
Experiencing this type of abandonment early in life can hide in our subconscious and drive our behaviors as adults without us knowing. It can affect everything from how we spend money to our ability to navigate relationships with the men in our lives. If you are interested in exploring how your relationship with your father may have affected you, let's chat. Check out my Youtube video below about the effects of absent fathers on their daughters.
